I love the overdressed moms at the playground! But it's also a very odd time for so many moms because EVERYTHING is ripe for comparison. Developmental milestones, sleep, post-partum weight loss, nursing. And everyone is just raw, but trying to do the best they can, I honestly think that asserting yourself and claiming (even if only to yourself) 'hey, I dress nice' will likely spill over into other realms of your life! And having that confidence matters, it just does-- as you've likely already realized. Xx

Oh absolutely. It’s all such a mental game. I think also going from working in an office to wrangling kids and working from home, whether you like it or not, your style, or perhaps not your style but the clothes you wear will inevitably shift.

I agree with all of this!! The sentiment of using fashion to put ourselves “first” even when we are clearly last is such a powerful way to make (even just a little space) for our own joy!!!

In motherhood there is so much out of our control but clothes are one thing we can and is so simple to make us feel good.

Oof the line about your effort being on display really hit me. Stepping outside of athleisure in any capacity feels like shining a spotlight on yourself. I used to feel self-conscious, like I needed to apologize for liking clothes but, as you said, I reframe it to be “this is my self-care.”

It’s so silly worrying about effort isn’t it? And in this case, worrying that I showered and got dressed ha. I wasn’t sure if activewear was a very localised trend but I think Covid just changed the game for everyone.

Totally!! I also was thinking about how athleisure seems to be specific for moms too (perhaps everywhere?) which would make an interesting case study.
